REPORT BY THE INSPECTORS OF ENGLISH SCHOOLS.

(a) Provided.

GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS.

1. Queen's College.-Headmaster, Mr. F. J. de Rome, M.B.E., B.Sc. During the absence on long leave of Mr. de Rome, the school was in charge of Mr. W. L. Handyside, M.A., B.Sc.

The maximum monthly enrolment was 610. attendance was 573 (565 in 1936).

2. In the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination con- ducted by the University of Hong Kong 47 boys sat, 28 gained School Certificates while 18 of these qualified for Matriculation. The Hong Kong Local Examination Syndicate held its School Certificate Examination for the first time. 85 boys sat, of these 76 gained certificates, 9 with Honours. In the rest of the School the Annual Examination results were satisfactory.

3. Seven past pupils graduated from the Hong Kong University at the end of the year.

4. A Science Society has been instituted for boys in Classes 1 and 2.

5. Physical Training and Organized Games are now com- pulsory.

6. King's College. Headmaster, Mr. W. Kay, M.A. From March 6th, 1937, Mr. Kay acted as Director of Education and the school was in charge of Rev. G. E. S. Upsdell, M.A. The maximum monthly enrolment was 802. The average attendance was 750 (695 in 1936).

7. In the Hong Kong School Certificate Examination con- ducted by the University of Hong Kong 57 boys sat and 51 gained School Certificates. Of these 23 qualified for Matricula- tion. Two King Edward VII Scholarships at the University and two Government Studentships-in-Training were gained.

In the Class 2 School Certificate Examination conducted by the Local Examination Syndicate 75 boys sat, 65 passed, 5 with Honours.

8. Physical Training and Organized Games are compulsory. The School won the Government Schools Junior Football League and the Inter-Schools Volley Ball League (Small Boys Division).

9. Ellis Kadoorie School.-Headmaster, Mr. C. Mycock, Maximum enrolment 414, average attendance 394 (same as in 1936).

10. 84 boys sat for the Class 4 Examination of whom 58 passed. In Classes 5, 6, 7 and 8, 305 boys were examined and 224 were successful in gaining promotion.

11. The School entered a team in the Government Schools Junior Football League. Inter-Class competitions are also held in the various games.

12. Yaumati School.-Headmaster, Mr. H. G. Wallington, M.A. Maximum enrolment 282. Average attendance 263 (same as last year).

13. Twenty-five boys sat for the Class 4 Examination of whom 17 passed. In Classes 5, 6, 7 and 8, 244 boys were examined and 219 passed.

14. Mr. Ho Yan Tak, Senior Anglo-Chinese Master, retired after over 31 years of faithful service.

15. Physical Training and Organized Games are compulsory.

16. Wantsai Schoot.-Headmaster, Mr. K. L. Chau, M.A. Maximum enrolment 214. Average attendance 195 (same as last year).

17. In the Class 4 Examination 50 pupils presented them- selves, of whom 43 were successful. The results of the Annual Examination were satisfactory in the other classes.

18. Gap Road School. Headmaster, Mr. Lo Yuk Lun. Maximum enrolment 180. Average attendance 165 (same as last year).

19. 158 boys took the Annual Examination and 153 passed.

Physical Training and Organized Games are compulsory.

Launch Picnics were held regularly during the Summer.

20. Taipo School.-Headmaster, Mr. Fung So. Maximum enrolment 103. Average attendance 92 (91 in 1936).

21. The school was provided with new premises as from 1st June, 1937. These are proving very satisfactory, being fire proof, well ventilated and quiet.

22. 86 boys took the Annual Examination of whom 55 passed,

23. Cheung Chau School.-Headmaster, Cheung King Pak, B.A. Maximum enrolment 60. Average attendance 53 (55 in 1936).
